Your adventure begins in Merzouga, where you meet your driver and board a comfortable 4×4 vehicle. Leave the main tourist routes behind and head into the wider desert surrounding Erg Chebbi.
Your first stops can include areas where fossils are found in the desert landscape. Your guide can explain how the region's geology preserves evidence of an ancient environment and why fossils are found across parts of the Sahara.
Position your board and begin your descent. First-time visitors can start slowly and use the gentler slopes to become comfortable with the board. Sitting down is the easiest option, while standing provides a more traditional sandboarding experience.
Continue toward the M'Ifis mining area, where abandoned mine workings provide a glimpse into the industrial and mineral history of the region. Explore the rugged surroundings and learn about the minerals and mining activities historically associated with the area.
Continue through the open desert toward areas inhabited or visited by nomadic families. When visits are possible, this provides an opportunity to learn about traditional desert life, daily routines, and how communities adapt to the harsh environment of the Sahara.
Continue to Khamlia Village, a small community near Merzouga known for its Gnawa musical heritage. Meet local musicians and, depending on the arrangement, enjoy a live performance while learning more about the community and its cultural traditions.
The final part of the excursion can take you toward Dayet Srji, a seasonal lake near Merzouga. When water is present, the lake can attract migratory birds and provide a striking contrast to the surrounding desert landscape.
After exploring the remote corners of the region, return to Merzouga by 4×4, arriving with a deeper understanding of the landscapes and communities surrounding Erg Chebbi.
