Sandboarding is one of the easiest activities to add to your Merzouga desert experience. At many desert camps, boards are available free of charge for guests, making it a convenient activity to enjoy during your stay.
The best time is generally later in the afternoon, when the intense daytime heat begins to ease and the dunes take on beautiful golden and orange tones.

After arriving at your desert camp or reaching the Erg Chebbi dunes, collect your sandboard and head toward a suitable dune.
Walk up the soft sand to reach the top of the dune. The climb itself is part of the adventure, with wide views across the surrounding Sahara from the summit.
Position your board and begin your descent. First-time visitors can start slowly and use the gentler slopes to become comfortable with the board. Sitting down is the easiest option, while standing provides a more traditional sandboarding experience.
Once darkness begins to settle, return to your camel and continue toward your desert camp. Follow the caravan through the evening landscape, with the first lights of the camp gradually appearing between the dunes.
Once you reach the bottom, climb back up and give it another try. There is no need to rush — enjoy the experience at your own pace and take breaks to admire the landscape or photograph the surrounding dunes.
If timed for the late afternoon, the activity becomes even more atmospheric as the sunlight softens and the dunes turn increasingly golden. After your sandboarding session, return to your camp or continue with your planned Erg Chebbi desert activities.
